Most organizations have a range of strategic initiatives on the go, but surprising few attempt to review those initiatives as an integrated package. Do you have a well-balanced portfolio of initiatives?
Decision Mechanics can help you develop and analyze your strategic profile. You may be undertaking the development of a new plan and wish to ensure that it covers all the bases. Or maybe you want a health check on your existing plan. Either way, your profile will help you diagnose and rectify strategic gaps in a rigorous manner.
Profiles are generally developed collaboratively, by your management team. Your initiatives are evaluated on three dimensions:
- importance
- performance
- novelty
Individual initiatives are then interpreted by where they fall on the following diagnostic chart.

Are you following a classic “Phase 1″, “Phase 2″ or “Phase 3″ strategy? If so, is that appropriate given the maturity of your organization/department? Does you strategy show signs of being “chaotic”…or “in denial”…or “catastrophe”? If so, what can you do about it? Your strategic profile will give you the answers.
Once you have developed your initial strategic profile, it can be quickly updated during subsequent planning sessions. This allows you to determine the point when your existing strategy has reached the end of its life. Periods of evolution and revolution can be instigated based on formal reviews—rather than in response to crises…or management fads.
